Is there a way to see what changes were made to a word document if the track
changes item was not selected?

Use the Compare and Merge Documents Tool to compare the current version
with a previous version.

I don't necessarily need to compare to a previous version. Is there a way to
see what changes were made to a current saved document if the track changes
options was not on when changes were made previously? Thanks

If changes had been made, then there would be a previous version that was
different. If you don't have access to that previous version ("Backup of
filename.wbk"), then there's no way to compare.

Guess I'm not following. Changes were made - how would I know if there was
another version and how would I find it?

If you have "Always create backup copy" checked on the Save tab of Tools |
Options, then there will be a "Backup of filename.wbk" file in the same
folder with the document. If not, then you won't have a backup copy unless
you specifically saved another version. For example, if the document was
received attached to an email, you could reopen that attachment and save it
under a different name and compare the present version to it. Otherwise, no,
there's no way to see what changes have been made.
