Default microsoft word wont open documents from my documents

Just installed Microsoft Office in XP. When i try to open a word document
from my documents or another folder it will not let me. Word will open but
no document is shown, also when i try to open a word file that was sent to me
as an attachment it will do the same thing. To open the file, i have to
first open microsoft word then open from there.

very annoying to have to do this.

Right click on the file name, choose Open with... and choose Other Programs.
Select Word and place a check in the box preceding "Always use this program
to open this kind of file."
