How can I put a nonbreaking hyphen into a word with autocorrect?
Certain words, such as e-mail, need to be typed with a non-breaking hyphen to
stop them breaking at line-end. The obvious way to do that is to make an auto-correct entry, but the non-breaking hyphen turns into an asterisk when I paste it in from an occurrence in my document, and turns into a null when I use Ctrl+_ at the keyboard. Is this a bug in Word 2002? If so, is there a bypass? -- Eric (UK) |

Erik,
I just did it using a formatted autocorrect entry. Type e-mail (using a non-breaking hyphen) in a document. Select it then use ToolsAutoCorrect to create a formatted autocorrect entry. Yes, an asterisk appears in the entry list, but when you type e-mail in the document the autocorrect is e-mail with non-breaking hyphen. The window in autocorrect entries must not be able to display a non-breaking hyphen. -- Greg Maxey/Word MVP See: http://gregmaxey.mvps.org/word_tips.htm For some helpful tips using Word. eob@southampton wrote: Certain words, such as e-mail, need to be typed with a non-breaking hyphen to stop them breaking at line-end. How can I put a nonbreaking hyphen into a word with autocorrec
Thank you, Greg; it worked a treat once I'd found out how to stop the
"formatted text" button being greyed out. If you select and copy a word containing a special character, it appears in the "to" field, and the format radio buttons are available. -- Eric (UK) "Greg Maxey" wrote: Erik, I just did it using a formatted autocorrect entry. How can I put a nonbreaking hyphen into a word with autocorrec
Hi. I'm using Word 2007 and have tried the above procedure to get a
non-breaking hyphen into the auto correct list. When I select the text the go to auto correct options, it will show an asterisk in the auto correct tab. When I enter the word in document, it will show an asterisk in the replaced word. If I select the text with the non-breaking hyphen and copy and paste it into the auto correct box, it will show a space. When that word is corrected in the document, it will also show a space. Is it different for 2007? Thank you. "eob@southampton" wrote: Thank you, Greg; it worked a treat once I'd found out how to stop the "formatted text" button being greyed out. Are you trying to save *just* a nonbreaking hyphen? If so, why? If you want
a word that includes a nonbreaking hyphen, you can certain do that by pasting the word in and then selecting the "Formatted text" radio button. -- Suzanne S.
