I'm using Word 2007 and have found that when I make formatting changes to
text (highlighting, underlining, changing from nonbold to bold or vice versa,
etc.), the change indicated in the markup area will initially be correct, but
when I save my changes, close the document, and reopen it, those labels will
have changed. The actual formatting changes in the document remain correct,
but the changes listed in the markup area are frequently very different. For
example, if I simply make a word bold, the listed markup may say "Font: 10
pt., Bold, No underline, Font color: Auto." This is an actual example of what
has happened. This is a problem because when others are looking at the work
I've done, they are unable to see what changes I've actually made without
having to refer to an original version of the document. If I try to reject
the changes listed in the markup area, the text gets really weird, changing
color, size, bold/not bold, etc. Has anyone else had these problems, and do
you have any advice as to how to fix them? Thank you.

I wonder if this document is updating the styles from its template when it
opens? If you go to the Developer tab, click the Document template button, is
"Automatically update document styles" activated?

No, do not activate it. This will pick up the style definitions from the
template that is attached to the document. If changes have been made in the
styles or formatting, this could result in changing them back to the template
"defaults". That's why I thought it might be the cause of what you're seeing.

Beyond that, I'm out of ideas. Never seen anything like it...

Mmmm. Unless you have a macro attached that's overwriting formatting (making
sure the formatting is correct by applying formatting properties) when the
document opens or when it closes.
