Default Pick Up Section/Subsection Number In Footer And Section Name In He

Hello,

This is a complex issue that I have not been able to solve. I am hoping that
someone here will be able to help me.

Until now, we have written and maintained our 700+ user guide in Adobe
FrameMaker. We recently converted it to Microsoft Word 2000 from Adobe
FrameMaker 7.0 because most of our people with FrameMaker knowledge have left
the company. There are several things in FrameMaker that we have notbeen able
to duplicate in Word and were hoping that someone could tell us HOW to do
this.

First: In FrameMaker, we set up a section/subsection/subsection number
scheme so that it would count based on the paragrapgh style we chose. For
example, 1.1.1 could count up to 1.1.2, 1.2.1, 2.1.1, 1.2, or 2 as we saw
fit. I figured out how to do this in Word although it does require more steps
in Word and is definitely "clunkier" in Word when compared to FrameMaker.
HOWEVER, in the FOOTER on every page in Framemaker, we had a tag that "picked
up" and displayed the current section/subsection/subsection designation from
that page. so if we were on Section 2, it would say Section 2 in the footer.
If we were on Section 3.1.8, it would say Section 3.1.8 in the footer. If
more than one number sequence appeared on the page, it displayed the first
one shown on that page. We have not been able to reproduce this functionality
in the footer in the Word document. Does anyone know how to pick up this
information out of the text automatically and insert it into the footer?

Second: Along the same lines as the previous question, in the old Framemaker
Doc, the header displayed the current section name on the top left and the
current section number on the top right. These should be easier because it
only did section level, ignoring the subsections in the header. Nevertheless,
we have not been able to reproduce this functionality in Word.

Finally: In FrameMaker we were able to insert screen shots by file
reference, rather than directly into the document, thus making the file size
much smaller. In Word, I only see where you can insert the graphics directly
into teh document. Is there a way to insert the graphics by file reference???

Thanks in advance for any help that you can provide us!

For the answer to your first question, see Word's Help topic: "Field codes:
StyleRef field."

For the second, using Insert | Picture | From File, click beside the Insert
button and choose "Link to file."
