Hello. To fix my messed up document, right now I'm trying to rebuild it in a
new document, by copying it in one chunk at a time. The problem is that my
headings and margins are messed up so badly in the old doc that I'm re-doing
them using a template I have been given to use, but that template does not
have my Listnums, which would be an enormous chore to re-do, since the
document has 93 of them, every single one of which is cross-referenced at
least once. How do I transport my particular Listnums (actually just one, but
it has its own name) into the new document? Right now, when I paste in a
chunk of text, the original Listnum (a field) is given a default label like
i), ii), etc., not (1), (2), etc. like I want. And all the cross-references
say 'Error! Reference source not found'.

Note: APossibly related question: Is there any way to merge templates,
specifying that one of them should override the other? (Strange finding: My
keystroke macros do appear in the document built from the prescribed
template, even though my Listnums don't.)

Note #2: My version of Word has the bug where if you select Bullets and
Numbers while a Listnum is selected, it crashes Word.

Note #3: I received some useful advice from Margaret Aldis on a similar
problem two years ago, but right now I can't make her post show up on my
screen.

Hmm, I rarely work with LISTNUM fields, and then only in conjunction
with heading styles where I've defined and named the LISTNUM style
during the setup process. Wouldn't that work here, as well?

Not sure what your goal is with this: you can attach a different
template to a document, this gives you instant access to the new
template's Styles, AutoTexts, etc. It does not "magically" change the
current document's section properties (like headers, page margins,
etc.). But I don't see how this would help you in your case.

I'm not familiar with that bug. You are positive that your list template
(which is messed up, as you say), that could account for it?

Thanks, Robert. As it turned out, although I never found a way to solve the
problem as stated, it dawned on me that if I went back to my original
document (which still had the Listnums like I need them to be), all I had to
do was change the Page Setup to match that of the required template, which -
believe it or not - I had already attached to the document. Wierdly, it gave
me differently styled headings per their requirements, but left my margin
sizes and Listnums alone (I found the required margin sizes by checking the
..dot). Anyway, now that the problem is solved, I'm proceeding without trying
to probe the arcane reasons for Word's particular preferences.

And yes, I'm quite certain that my version of Word (2002, 10.2627, 2625 -
whatever those numbers mean) does have the bug I mentioned. It was a Word MVP
who told me that, and I've confirmed it on two computers.

Not sure what your goal is with this: you can attach a different
template to a document, this gives you instant access to the new
