Index: How to replace middle #s in a continous run with hyphen
Have created index, in which some entries are marked as appearing on many
pages in a row. Yet, index lists every single number, not hyphenating for a run of numbers. In the samples, on the Index creating windows, under Print Preview, it shows that Word will do this. It doesn't on the screen, and it doesn't when you print it out. |

There is no way to automate this, you must create a range manually. Instead
of marking every entry in several subsequent pages, select the pages, insert a bookmark, and then insert an index entry that references the bookmark. The index will then display a range for that index entry. -- Suzanne S. Index: How to replace middle #s in a continous run with hyphe
Well, this response made me realize I should have been more specific, that I had built the index using a concordance file, so the whole index was built automatically. I understand I could manually edit the index, but I'm guessing that will mess up the entries if it is repaginated. The document I'm indexing is the manual for a software product, and will undoubtedly be updated often, so I don't want to mess it up. Thanks though "Suzanne S. A concordance is not the best way to build an index and in this case won't
work well. You don't edit the index itself manually; you edit the index entries. Remove the XE fields from the pages in question, select and bookmark the range, and then insert a new XE field (Alt+Shift+X) pointing to the range. -- Suzanne S.
