Default how to correct winword has caused an error in winword.exe

When trying to open Word in Office 2000, the notice "winword has caused an
error in winword.exe and will now close" comes up on the screen and will not
allow word to open. What causes this problem and how does it get corrected? I
have uninstalled and reinstalled from the disc but that does not seem to help
and I have not found this issue addressed on the Microsoft site.
