Working in Word 2000, it was possible press a menu shortcut sequence (ALT-O,
S, for FormatStyles) to quickly display a compact, unformatted list of
stylenames to review and select from. In Word 2003, there seems to be no
alternative to a list of formatted examples. The larger heading styles are so
wide that I can't see the whole name in the window, and all of the line items
are spaced so far apart that scrolling is almost always required. In
addition, the styling makes it very hard to navigate the list visually. Is
there a way to obtain the old kind of list in Word 2003, either through a
compatibility option or by adding a custom command to the Format menu? I do
not want to have to click on anything, just use the keyboard.

Although it is far from obvious, if you want plain-text style names, you
have to settle for plain-text font names as well. Both are controlled by the
"List font names in their font" check box on the Options tab of Tools |
Customize.

Alternatively, you can add a toolbar button to access the Styles dialog
directly and set it to "Styles in use."

That is very helpful, thank you. What would make it a complete solution
(apart from Microsoft separating the font list display mode from the styles
list display mode, as you point out) would be knowing how to open the style
list dropdown button using the keyboard rather than the mouse. I'll open a

Ctrl+Shift+S puts the focus in the Styles box. You can then begin to type
the name of a style. When you have typed enough for the correct style to be
displayed, press Enter to apply it. Or you can use the arrow keys to move up
and down.
