Default How to I remove the gray background from an equation object?

When I insert an equation into a Word doc a gray background appears behind
the equation object. Is there a way to set the background so that it is
transparent?

In Word, click on Tools | Options | View | Field shading: "When
selected" or "Never" | OK.
