Default Have word XP and 97, I want doc files to open in 97 automatically

As the subject says, for some reason it wont do it, I go to the folder
options in windows xp and set it to word 97 and it still opens in xp.
Why is this? Is there a way to fix it?

Both Word versions share a number of registry entries. There will always be
some cross contaimination if you have both on the same operating system.
Open the chosen application and then open your documents.
