Default encoding in xp word

Does anyone please know how to change encoding in word,i brought up an
application form and i can not see what it says even though i tried all the
prompts given?

Are you sure this is a Word document? Does the file have a .doc extension?

it opens a word document but i think it is pdf

If the file extension is .pdf, then this is an Adobe Portable Document
Format file, and you will need to use Adobe Reader to read it. If you don't
have Adobe Reader, it is a free download from
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
