font listing
The answers are "no" and "maybe, with difficulty".
The bitmapped .fon fonts are for screen display only. Because Word draws its screen based on what it will print, screen-only fonts are explicitly excluded. See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=291354 for the official explanation. The displayed name of a font is embedded within the font file, and has no relation to the name of the file. To change it, you need to use a font editor. There are some freeware and shareware font editors available for download (check Google). If all you want to do is change the display name, you don't have to worry about the quality of the editor's tools for modifying letter shapes. -- Regards, Jay Freedman Microsoft Word MVP FAQ: http://word.mvps.org Email cannot be acknowledged; please post all follow-ups to the newsgroup so all may benefit. Geoff Bayes wrote: I occasionally have need, within a memo or letter, to list stuff in columns and for clarity I switch to a fixed width font. None of these are to my taste, probably by reason of the constraints on their creators, although Monaco is passable. So I downloaded a few others to try them out and came across two problems: - Microsoft Word only displays TrueType fonts. There are others (bitmap fonts .fon) in the \Windows\Fonts folder, including Courier, but they are not shown in the document font list. - It would be useful to change the name of the font to show that it is fixed width, renaming the file has no effect. Any way of fixing this? Geoff http://graffiti.virgin.net/geoff.bayes |
