Default Header and Footer Not displaying correctly

When you insert a header, the following information is displayed:
{ AUTHOR } Page { PAGE } {DATE \@ "M/d/yyyy" }
When you try and view that in print preview, you see:
{ AUTHOR } Page { PAGE } {DATE \@ "M/d/yyyy" }
not
Page 1 3/1/2005.
I've tried hitting ALT+F9, and that forces a change, but when I try to print
it out, it is still { AUTHOR } Page { PAGE } {DATE \@ "M/d/yyyy" }.
Has anyone had a problem like this?

OfficeXP with all updates applied. WinXP Pro, all updates applied. DELL
computer.

Go to Tools Options Print and uncheck "Field codes". This is independent
of the option of the same name on the View tab of the dialog, which is
controlled by Alt+F9.

In Word, click on Tools | Options | Print | uncheck the "Field codes"
box | OK.
