Default Section Breaks & Page Numbering

I use Word 2002 with XP OS.

I've got a challenge and need a work around. The project I am working on is
a training manual developed with two templates--one template for the front
matter (cover, disclaimer page, TOC and the like)--the other template
contains the content of the course comprising several lessons. Section
Breaks are used at the end of each lesson. Page numbering in each of these
sections is becoming problematic.

We want Lesson One (which begins after the Introduction section), as well as
subsequent Lessons to begin numbering with a 1. Lesson One would be numbered
1-2.....1-31. Lesson Two 2-1....2-12. Lesson Nine 9-1...9-......You get the
picture. I can't use fields for numbering in the section breaks because the
lesson numbers return the wrong section number and the TOC is incorrect. I
tried manually typing the lesson number and the dash then using the page
number field which numbers pages for each lesson correctly but, of course,
again the TOC is incorrect.

Is there a workaround?

Thanks. Appreciate any help I can get on this one.
