When I hit the enter key for a new line (as in a poem) how do I keep Word
from capitalizing that word at the start of the new line?

Stop hitting enter. Use shift+enter instead.

Hi JoAnn,

Try this in Word 2007 if that's the version you have:

1. Click on the round Microsoft Office button in the upper left-hand corner
of your screen.

2.Click on the Word Options button.

3. Click on Proofing on the left.

4. Under the AutoCorrect tab, uncheck the box next to "Capitalize first
letter of sentences."

5. Click OK two times to get out of the open windows.

Thank you - I don't write poens because when I try, they are less than
inspiring. Hallmark is not knocking on my door.
