Default Don't hyphenate this word

With automatic hyphenation turned on is there any way to select a word
so that it's not hyphenated?

Yes. Select the word, go to Tools | Language | Set Language and check "Do
not check spelling or grammar."

Thanks, Suzanne. That's an effective workaround and it certainly
solves my current problem. Although it does occur to me that stopping
the spelling check rather than stopping the hyphenation carries with it
the potential for error should someone erroneously change the word
later.

Hyphenation, unfortunately, is part of "proofing."
