Usually, I select some text in a doc and then select a style to apply to the
text, and it works as (I think) it should. But sometimes, as is currently
the case, I select the text, select the style to apply, and the style format
gets updated to the formatting of the selected text.

Can someone tell me why this happens? Does this document have some feature
enabled that I don't usually?

seeing it kick in without prompting... Which version of Word is this? The
problem is just in the one document, and happens for every style? What steps do
you follow to apply a style?

I haven't had time to test this thoroughly, but there seems to be a
difference depending on where I select the style. If I select the style from
the Style combo box in the toolbar, the text gets updated. If I select the
style from the Style and Format pane, the style gets updated from the text.
Does that make sense?

I don't think this is a setting that could get set for me. I inherited the
document from an author who barely understands how to use Word, so I think he
set this feature inadvertently.

I'm on Word 2003, Windows XP.

happens differently (if anything) if you activate it?
