Default Font choices changed to letters

In Word 2003, our font choices changed to A, B, C, etc. All other
applications are normal and the fonts look ok in the control panel. I have
tried:
1)Changed printer to HP printer from Epson
2)Reinstalled the Epson printer
3)Repaired Word
4)Uninstalled and reinstalled Word

all to no avail. Any ideas?

This may be related to a problem that causes filenames to be reduced to one
letter; this problem occurs when Word is set to (Windows 95) compatibility
mode in
Windows XP. Instructions from Office MVP Beth Melton for correcting this:

To rectify:

- Locate WinWord.exe
- Right-click and select Properties
- Select the Compatibility tab
- See if you have a Compatibility Mode set
- If set remove the tick in "Run this program in compatibility mode"

Thanks, Suzanne, that seemed to fix it! Not sure why it got in compatibility
mode.
