Default How do I set backspace to delete a selected piece of text?

I am no longer able to use my backspace button to delete a selection of text.
Nor am I able to select a piece of text and replace it by starting to type. I
was able to do this but another user changed something and now I am unable to
find how to chnage it back. It is not an overtype function I am looking for
but something similar.

Any ideas?
