Default How do you do the exponent in a Word document for Algebra?

I am taking College Algebra and my Professor wants all answers with exponents
to be typed as such. Does anyone know how to do this? Or should I just type
out the word "exponent"?

Format it as Superscript: Ctrl+Shift+=

How about e(italic)x(superscript) ? or simple exp(x)?
