Default Need to track many documents. Any suggestions?

I create job aid docs for my client. Right now I have more than 100 docs to
wrangle (and growing all the time).
Now, I have to be somewhat of a project manager as well. I have to track
these docs so I know which is the most current version, which have been
validated, which need validation, whether they've been uploaded to my
client's intranet and whether they've been added to the client's help
system--and when.
The best that anybody can come up with is creating a tracking tool in Excel
and update manually.
However, I can't help but think there has to be a better way. Does anybody
know of a document tracking tool that could help me automate this process
rather than rely on my brain. I have trouble keeping track of my socks, let
alone gazillions of docs.
Anybody have to do this? How do you do this?
Thanks.

Not sure, Joel, but I *do* feel your pain.
I just did a Google search and after a few throw-aways, found this:

I did not check out the tools, but hey... free is free.

Hope it helps!
