I type my letters on a saved letterhead in Word. When I print the letter, the
first page with typed content is printed together with three blank pages
numbered 2, 3, and 4. What causes this and how can this be avoided?

I suspect that your Template has 4 pages!

Open the Template and check - delete any page breaks in
the Template. Header and Numbering information will be
preserved, and if you type "long" letter, then the additional
pages will be numbered, and without heading.
