Default How do I get rid of "ghost" comment markers in a document?

I'm working on a Word document where various parties are inserting tracked
changes and comments. There are some places in the document where a character
appears that looks like a comment marker, but there is no comment there. The
character doesn't get copied if I mark the text and ctrl+c, but it does get
printed.

Any ideas of why this has happened and how I can get rid of it?

Thanks,

Karen.
