Default Word 2002 - Weird behavior of hyperlink character style

I use the hyperlink character style to format cross-reference links so my
hyperlinks and my cross references all look the same when I PDF my word
documents.

However... the IT guy came and upgraded me from Word 97 to Word 2002 and all
of a sudden the hyperlink character style isn't displaying correctly. I have
it set up to be default paragraph font + Arial + underline + font color dark
blue. However, it displays as Arial + font color black. No underline, no dark
blue. The weird part of it is if I select the text and choose the
FormatFont menu item, it tells me that the selected text IS dark blue and
underlined. WTF??

Anybody seen this behavior? I've tried stripping out all the formatting by
selecting the whole paragraph and applying "Default paragraph font" then
selecting the cross reference and applying the Hyperlink style but it always
displays incorrectly. arggh

Thanks

Mike

Tapping in the dark here, but: what happens if you format any word in
another style with the dark blue color without the hyperlink style --
does it look better?

[If not, in which View are you? Check your printer settings for
something like all colors to black, maybe?]

I make extensive use of the dark blue color in my document... I've set my
heading styles to that color and they all display just fine. If I apply that
font color to a word locally, it displays just fine as well. I just did an
experiment and entered a url and Word automatically applied the Hyperlink
character style (as expected) and it displays correctly. I also tried just
selecting a random word and applying the Hyperlink character style. That
works just fine as well... it displays exactly as it should. It seems like
there's something about a cross reference that's preventing the hyperlink
character style from displaying correctly. It appears to be some sort of
bug. I've created another character style with the exact same formatting and
I can apply it to the cross references with no difficulty but I would prefer
to use only a single character style for these things.

Ah, well... Word happens, eh?

OK, this rules out any printer driver troubles, I'd wager.

I don't have any Word 2002 installation handy to test this, but I doubt
this is a standard behaviour there. If you like, could you make a (very)
small sample document which shows this, zip it up and send it to my
email address?

Yes it does, frequently! :-)

Greetings
