Default How do I stop deleting my work when I add something else?

When I try to add words or commas to a sentence, the rest of my sentence is
deleted while I am typing the new word or sentence. I lose everything after
the point that I am fixing. How do I shut this auto delete off?

Press the Insert key once to toggle between Overtype mode (what
you are in now) and Insert mode.
