What determines a read only file in a Wrod document and how do you change the
attribute from read only so that you can make changes on a cd-rw disck?

2. Explorer: Right click on file and change Properties to Read Only.

1. The reverse of Step 2, if applicable
2. Open Document and perform a 'File Save As' to a new document
3. Buy a Password 'cracker' and crack the password

Files on a CD (even a CD-RW) are read-only by default. You do NOT want to
try to save directly to a CD (or any other removable media) because the
working folder is where Word creates temp files, and this can cause
problems. Instead, save the file to the HD, then copy to the CD. To open a
CD file for edit, copy to the HD, remove the read-only attribute, edit,
save, then copy back to the CD.

Thanks to all for the help. What you say is helpful and that is what I am
doing. However, at one time I was able to save to a cd, open the file, make
changes and save them all in one step. I still am able to do that on a
couple of cd's but some of the others have been changed to read only and I
don't know how that happened. As you can tell you are dealing with a novice,
but I am learning by this process. thanks

I saved a file to my hd and made the changes to it but when i go to save it
to the cd I get the error message the folder is a read only. How do I get
the file back to the cd?

Never make changes on a file that isn't on your hard drive. Copy it from the
CD to your hard drive, follow Mike's advice, open Word, Make your changes,
copy it back to the CD.

Don't SAVE to the CD; COPY to the CD (or use your CD-mastering software).
