Default I am Canadian and hate centimeters.

I have tried to change the ruler to "inches", but when I open Word again it
is reverted back to centimeters. (Generally it is hard to keep a modified
Word template from deveriting back to the installed version.)

'Generally' in what sense? Not normally on problem unless there's something
strange in your installation.

Have you looked at
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/MissingMenusEtc.htm

It may provide a clue.

Are you sure the ruler is displaying centimeters (cm) and not
character units (ch)? If it's the latter, then see
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=299339 "You cannot change
ruler measurement unit from character units after upgrade to
Office XP" or http://www.gmayor.com/Character_Units.htm .

Yes I have, but I now looked at it more seriously. I have to check and see if
I have the upgrade. Thank you
