Default Merging excel 2003 spread sheet to word 2000 document

Hi

I am trying to merge excel spreadsheet to existing word document but any
date in the mergefield is coming up as 5/19/2011. I really want this to
read 19th May 2011.The date on the spreadsheet has been formatted and
customised.

Can you help?
