I do a lot of research papers. I post the URL in the footnote. Today's
URLs tend to be very long, and leaves half a line above as it jumps to the
next line. By reducing the font to 9 or 8, the notes are more presentable.
I also prefer to have them in a different font style.

With the selection in a footnote, is use select Styles and formatting from
the Format menu, the Footnote text style will be available so that you can
modify it.

3. In Word 2002 or 2003, choose Custom in the S&F task pane, then click

4. In Word 2003 (possibly 2002 as well), right-click in a Footnote Text
paragraph, choose Styles..., and proceed as in (2).

I did NOT say that the style would be listed in the Styles and Formatting
task pane when you select All Style.

I said that with the selection in the text of the footnote, if you select
Styles and Formatting from the Format menu, the Footnote Text style will
appear.

I'm still not seeing it in the task pane, even with "All styles" selected
(though I do see it in the Styles list), regardless of view.

FWIW, even in Word 97 and Word 2000 you can right-click a Footnote
Text paragraph and choose Style from the context menu to open the
Style dialog box.
