Default Templates and Styles - style name overriding others

I have created a new template that works very well until you add a new style
while using the template. Although the styles all work when added to a body
of text, the name of the style being used does not appear correctly in the
styles and formatting panel on the right hand side (the toolbar). Rather than
showing the name of the style that is being used, it always shows the name of
the new style that has been created since opening the template. Any
suggestions for why this is and how to rectify it would be really welcome as
it is driving me mad!!
