Default Creating comments in Word 2003

The comment feature in Word 2003 seems more cumbersome to use than in
previous versions, or maybe I just can't see what may be right in front of me!

When I want to add a comment to a document, a pane opens up at the bottom.
I really dislike this feature and just want to add a comment and not have to
fool around with these panes. Also -- and I'm sure there is an easy answer
to this -- how do I shut this pane/close the comment? Right now, I grab the
bottom of the pane, pulling it down and out of sight.

Any help much appreciated. Thanks.

If you're in Normal View, you get the comment pane - that's the way it is.
You can do what you're doing to remove the pane - or Select Window Remove
Split from the Mneu (Alt+W, S if you're a keyboard man)

The pane that displays the comments is called the Reviewing Pane. Assuming
you have the Reviewing toolbar displayed, it's toggled with the rightmost
button.
