Default indexing in word

I have an old word document (before 2000) where the index is built from XE
field for which the text section between "quotes" uses the tab character for
formating purpose. such as:
XE "Poirier: Jeanne (the tab character) 1625 - 1712"

The (tab character) is ignored in word 2003. Is there a way around that?

There are several thousands entry in my index and I would hate to loose all
the formating, when I make an update.

Any suggestion?
