Default Add a warning to Insert Bookmark that spaces are not allowed.

And there should be a diagnostic beep or message provided when the user
enters illegal characters. Otherwise, its mysterious why the Add button
wont appear.

It IS mysterious, because the prohibition of spaces (and other forbidden
characters) is not mentioned in "Word 2002 Inside Out" (p. 302, text box,
item 2), nor in the PC-based help system, but only in the online Help system.
It took me half an hour to even guess what the problem was. I had no idea
that certain characters were forbidden; it is a poor design principle not to
mention such "gotchas" if they exist. (Ideally, I'd suggest the gotchas be
eliminated, but I suppose there must be a reason for them in this case.)
Adding three words of warning to the text box would cost nothing--and adding
a beep upon invalid character entry would be an inexpensive, user-friendly
nicety.

And perhaps a sign on every tree: "Do not drive into this tree"

From the Help topic "Add a bookmark":

Bookmark names must begin with a letter and can contain numbers. You can't
include spaces in a bookmark name. However, you can use the underscore
character to separate words€” for example, "First_heading."

Oops--you're right. But I did spend half an hour looking through the book and
repeatedly trying to get Insert Bookmark to accept a bookmark entry before I
looked at Help. Im sure there are many users whove given up on this feature
as a result of these omissions, and never finally stumbled onto the answer,
reasoning that such a basic piece of information would never have been
omitted from both the manual and the dialog box. It should be mentioned in
both places. That's the bottom line.

Default Add a warning to Insert Bookmark that spaces are not allowed.

Guidance/reminder sentences are included in other text boxes, so what Im
proposing has a precedent. For instance, in the GoTo dialog box, clicking in
the left-hand pane on Line (or Section or Footnote or Comment) will bring up
a sentence under the right-hand drop-down menu that reads, €śEnter + and €“ to
move relative to the current location. Example: +4 will move forward four
items.€ť

Thats helpful, and theres room available for it€”so its appropriate to
show it to the user. But suppose that those sentences hadnt been there, and
that I had come along and suggested that they be added: No doubt Id have
received the same responses as those in this thread: that I can bloody well
RTFM, or click on Help.

But if that sort of response is inappropriate in the case of the GoTo
box€”and it is€”then its doubly inappropriate in the case of the suggestion
Im making here, because the quirk that Im suggesting needs to be warned
about:
1. Is not documented in the manual,
2. Requires only three words of help text (€śspaces not permitted€ť), and
3. Is a €śgotcha,€ť because the user expects spaces to be allowed in names,
since they are allowed in filenames. (This is why the remark below is
ludicrous.)
