Default Apostrophes (€˜) convert to equal (=) signs

When I receive a WORD doc the apostrophes are converted to equal signs (=).
How can I correct this?

The document was almost certainly composed (at some point) in WordPerfect,
using the WP Typographic Symbols font for the "curly quotes." Although you
could reverse the problem by installing this font, a much better solution in
the long run is to use Find and Replace to replace the symbols with the
correct ones (single and double quotes, dashes, etc.). If you replace = with
', @ with ", etc., Word's AutoCorrect will get the direction right most of
the time (you'll need to carefully check for apostrophes at the beginnings
of words, however).
