Default Editing (Group/Ungroup) a scanned item

How can I get a scanned item so I am able to edit it? I figured if I
ungrouped the data I could make changes, but I can't select the group/ungroup
option.

What kind of "scanned item" is it?

If it's text, you have to use Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software
to convert the scanned file (which is just a picture of the text) into
editable text. Most scanners include such a program in their software
bundle, or you can try the Microsoft Document Imaging program that comes
with Office.

If it's a graphic object, use a graphics editor such as Microsoft Paint or
Paint.Net (a free download from http://www.getpaint.net/) to modify it. Save
it as a graphics file (usually .jpg or .gif) and import that into Word.
