Default auto-numbering won't work

I'm using Word 2003, and have used auto-numbering successfully for years.
However, I seem to have broken it recently because if I hit enter to proceed
with the next item on a numbered list, it does not default to a list entry
(and I have to click on number and TAB multiple times to get to the right
list level).

I do have my AutoCorrect options set to apply numbered and bulleted lists as
I type.

I have a feeling I have messed up my normal template somehow. Is there any
way to make this work, short of trying finding and installing a clean normal
template? If not, how do I do that?

Thanks!

Check the "Style for following paragraph" for the paragraph style you are
using.

Thanks Stefan, that actually worked.

My next question would be - why wouldn't I have ever had to do that before
(it seemed to break halfway thru this doc I'm writing)? Could it be because I
have my outline number styles defined as headers?

Thanks again!

All Heading styles have Normal defined as the following paragraph style, so
if you're using the built-in heading styles, then yes, that's the issue.
