Default why a document double spaces even though it says single spacing

A student is trying to use Word 2003 for a bibliography & it keeps double
spacing even though it's set to single spacing.

Two things to check:

1. Select the text and, on the Format menu, click Paragraph. Click the
Indents and Spacing tab. Make sure that Line Spacing is set to
"Single" and that Spacing Before and Spacing After are both set to
zero. Click OK.

2. On the File menu, click Page Setup. Click the Layout tab. Make sure
that Vertical Alignment is set to "Top". Click OK.
