Default Query a mail merge for multiple letters at once?

The office has a mail merge of about 2900 customer letters. The current
procedure is to query the merge for each letter one at a time by searching
one of the propogated fields for a unnique contract number.

I have a few hundred of these letters, and would like to query the mail
merge for multiple letters at a time. Possible?

Version of word involved? What's the data source application?

Would the recipients have any particular thing in common that you could use
to set a filter?
