Default a blank document will not open in Word when it starts

I am trying to help a friend who has Word 2002. Every time he starts Word a
certain document comes opens named john1.doc. If I click new blank document
then a file named john2.doc comes up. Basically I can never get a blank new
document to open. the only document to open is john1 , john2, john3,
john4.doc and etc.
