Default Auto-increment

I am doing a mail merge for labels. At the moment I do a text file
with a wlist of numbers in one or two columns. I then use these in
some fields on labels.

But can I ditch the data file and somehow use fields with calculations?
If given a starting number, a step value and a ending number, it could
do the same thing.

Can I do this? Or must I stick with a data file?

It depends what else is on the label, but see

Thanks for the clarification. I think I will stick with the data file
approach.
