Default Custom style reverts to Normal

Applied custom styles to a Word 2002 document in Word 2003. Upon saving the
document, all styles changed back to Normal.

Why did this happen?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

How are you saving the document (what file format)? How are you opening it?

Opened with the MicroSoft editor in SharePoint. Saved as a .doc.

What I was getting at was how you were opening it in Word? Through Word's
File Open dialog? By double-clicking on the file in Windows Explorer? Etc.
If you're opening it from the File Open dialog and have "Recover Text from
Any File" set as the file type, it might appear that the document had
reverted to Normal, though this is much less likely in Word 2002 or 2003
than in earlier versions where this setting was "sticky."

Still, if you are judging by the apparent lack of formatting, could it be
that you're in Normal view with "Draft font" enabled?

Furthermore, were these custom styles created in the document itself or in a
template? If in the document, make sure that "Automatically update document
styles" isn't checked in Tools | Templates and Add-ins; no telling what
effect that might have on custom styles, especially if the template is
unavailable (though it should not have any). And make sure you're saving as
a Word 2003 document and not some other file type.
