ometimes when I click exit in the main file menu, Word won't go away. If I
extend the menu to its full length and try again, it sometimes does and
sometimes doesn't. The X at the top right always closes it.
What sort of thing might cause this? (In Windows XP home ed. with SP2 ,
on a 2GHerz machine with 256MB Ram and a 9.8GB disk.)

Don't know.
But what _may_ help is an option in the Help-menu that says something like
'Analysis and recovery...' (I'm using a Dutch version of Word in which the
option reads 'Analyse en herstel...').
Reinstalling Word may help as well.
