Default I can't delete highlighted text

When I highlight text in Microsoft Word, and press backspace, nothing
happens! the text cursor just moves to the beginning of the highlighted
text. This is only happening in Microsoft Word 2003, not in any other
program, and I do not have either of the WordPerfect options selected!
Please help!
