Default How Do I know which program to use to open a specific file ?

When I tried to open an e-mail attachement,
I either used :
1. Adobe Acrobat (latest version), or
2. Microsoft Office Word 2007
Most of the time, I cannot open an attachement or file
with anyone of them.
Please help
Thank you

Acrobat opens PDF files. Word opens DOC/DOCX documents (and a few other
related file formats).
It is bad practice to open files directly from e-mail messages. Save them to
the hard drive and open them with the appropriate application.
