Default Word 2007 randomly makes a doc I'm working on "read-only"

Periodically, it seems Word 2007, in the middle of a writing session,
decides that the file I've been working on and saving should be "read-
only." I then have to save the file under a different name. It does
this both on .doc and .docx file formats, new files as well as older
ones created with previous versions of Office.

I've also noticed that when this happens, the "digital signature"
option in the Prepare menu grays out. It is not grayed out before the
doc goes mysteriously read-only. I've tried removing hidden
attributes as well, no joy. Any ideas how I can keep this from
happening, or what I'm inadvertently doing to cause it?

Hi Jason,

Are you saving the documents to the hard drive on your local PC, or to a memory stick, CD/DVD or to a network/mapped drive?

What version of Windows are you using?

Are you using the Office Button=Prepare feature(s) specifically or is it that you just noticed the digital signature choice being
unavailable while investigating the situation?

Bob, thanks for the reply. In answer to your questions, all docs are
being saved to the local hard drive. Windows XP SP2+. The prepare
feature was something I noticed, not a feature I was trying to use...

Thanks!
