Default I need to set up a 'top' key to return to the TOC.

I would like to add a 'top' key either three times to a page or floating to
follow whichever page I am on in the document.

I believe that I have Windows XP.

In some recent versions of Word you can add a Go to TOC button to a toolbar.
Alternatively, Shift+F5 or the Back button on the Web toolbar should take
you back. There is no really usable means of adding such a control to the
document itself.
