How do you align text with line #'s in a pleading?

text of the pleading to align with the line numbers in the left hand margin. What's the secret to getting this to work? |

Assuming that you are already using a fixed value for line spacing, try
checking the "Don't center 'exact line height' lines" Compatibility option for the document (Office button | Word Options, Advanced category).
