Am new user of MS Word 2002. In Document Map, if I paste in new text from
other documents, the new headings don't appear on the map, only the original ones. Why is this? |

Thanks for your reply. Not sure what you mean by heading styles and outline
level, they are just new headings from other documents, usually bold and underlined, sometimes capitals. Whatever, they just don't show up. Some of the docs. have just been transferred to Word from Works Word processor. "Suzanne S. Barnhill" wrote: Are the new "headings" in heading styles with an outline level? -- Suzanne S. When you switch into the document map, it applies outline levels to things
it thinks are headings (short, one line paras, usually), regardless of whether you already have headings. The Doc Map requires outline levels to function. I believed I have noticed that adding outline levels tends to happen the first time you open it, but it does not happen every time you go into Doc Map. I'm assuming that's what's happening here. Turning the Doc Map off and back on might bring the new headings--closing and reopening the doc should also do it. On 4/4/05 9:41 PM, "Blip" wrote: Thanks for your reply. Thank you again...what previous comments have prompted me to do is re format
my doc. I think now it was because I had added in pieces with different formatting , font etc. - once formatted the headings have shown up. Your comments I am noting however for future ref. cheers. As Daiya says, the DM does tend to make headings out of things that aren't,
but basically, every paragraph in Word has an assigned outline level: Body Text, Level 1, Level 2, etc. The ones that show up in the DM are those that have a level other than Body Text. By default, all paragraphs are Body Text, no matter how you format them. If you apply "heading"-type formatting, the DM may assign an outline level to them, which isn't always what you want. Word's built-in heading styles (Heading 1, Heading 2, Heading 3, etc.) have built-in (and immutable) outline levels corresponding to their number, and they will always be picked up automatically by the DM. Using Word's built-in headings is recommended for a number of reasons (see http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numb...ingStyles.html); note that you can modify any heading style to look any way you want (see http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/styl...ifyAStyle.html) -- Suzanne S.
