Hi sbr4tdy,

What file format - doc/docx? Is this on your HDD or a USB stick? Do you have backups - if not, why not?

This is why we recommend never saving directly to removable media. Always
save to the hard drive and COPY to the removable media - there's a macro to
facilitate that at http://www.gmayor.com/automatically_backup.htm .

Can you copy the file to your hard drive? If not you *may* be able to
recover the file with file recovery software. If you can see

Just in case you need to go down the File Recovery process - don't change *anything* on the USB stick - especially don't add any
files to it or change any others on it.

Default Cannot open file because it is corrupt

More and more often there are problems with corrupt files on USB sticks -
and they are very difficult, if not impossible, to recover. Corrupt zip
files (which is what .docx fles are under the covers) have little or no
salvageable content.

The reasons for this are very different from what they used to be and,
whilst it is still not a good idea to save direct to removable media, it is
also very important that USB sticks are 'safely removed'. People, especially
young people, seem to think they can just plug and unplug these things
without problem - maybe that should be the case, but, sadly, it isn't.

If you don't have a backup, you are probably out of luck.

Hi Tony,

It might still be possible to recover the content from one of Word's deleted tmp files.
